Augustus (63 B.C - 14 A.D)The first emperor of Rome Empire. He unified the Romans under his rule in 27 B.C after a long and gruesome civil war. He consolidated his gains with an age of peace (Pax Romana). In times of peace and especially with a stable government head, time can be devoted to the arts. As the fore-bearer to peace, there begins a literacy movement. The Augustan Age of literature starts in his reign, often referred to as the Golden Age of Latin literature. Augustus sees the Roman people as the most superior and one way to show this is through expansion and cultivation of the arts. Authors such as Vergil, Horace, Ovid, etc. were the figures of this age. Their works would later become the subject of admiration and scholarly debate. In this age of Augustus' reign, many authors praised Augustus as the rightful ruler through the fates. They have to do that partially because he is the boss (you savage and powerful boss). While he may be emperor, he himself indulged in the literary arts. He dabs his papers on the subject of military exploits. Be sure to not mess with the son of a God (Fīlius Dīvī!!!), who is boss literally and literately.
