Horace (65 B.C - 8 B.C)
He was the son of a freedman from Venusia. His father gave him the best education available in Rome under Orbilius, and then later in Athens. Horace served in Brutus's army from 44-42 BC, and said that he ran away after his side lost at the Battle of Phillipi. When he returned back to Italy, the victors of the civil war pardoned Horace. As a result, he purchased a secretaryship in the office of quaestor. Horace gracefully refused Augustus’ offer to make Horace his personal secretary. He later was presented by Augustus a Sabine farm. However, he was stripped of his family property, which drove him to write poetry. His patron was Maecenas.
